Welcome to our FAQ page! Here, you'll find answers to some of the most common questions about our heating and cooling services. We know that choosing the right system or service can be overwhelming, and we're here to help. Yes, we have licensed plumbers, oil-burner technicians, refrigeration mechanics and sheet metal workers. We are fully licensed and hold an ongoing commercial general liability insurance policy.
H.E. Armstrong Mechanical Ltd. opened in 1958, acquiring Valley Burner Service in 1996, which was rebranded as VBS Energy in 2025. We remain a family owned and operated company.
- Installation, maintenance and repair of residential oil-fired furnaces, boilers and hot water heaters, ductless and ducted heat pump systems, HRV/ERV systems, exhaust/ventilation systems, ductwork installation/modification.
- Commercial new build and retrofit plumbing and HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) as determined by bid specifications of the project.

For new equipment installation, or system replacements – Yes
Estimate prices are valid for 30 days, a 50% deposit of the quoted price is required prior to booking the installation of new/replacement equipment.
For service repairs/emergency issues or general upkeep – No
We can provide you with an hourly rate, and once a technician has diagnosed the issue, and determined parts needed, we can provide pricing on the parts if requested. However, the final cost will include the total time needed (travel, diagnostics and repair) along with the parts used, we will not know the final cost until the repair is completed.

Yes, for replacement systems, or new equipment purchase and installation, financing is available pending application approval through Financeit.
We do not offer financing for general maintenance or servicing of equipment, this includes services such as repairs, part replacements, cleaning and inspections of units, etc.
No, we operate Mon-Fri, from 8AM-4:30PM. We have an answering service for calls received outside of these hours. We will return all calls as quickly as possible the following business day. However, if no message is left there will be no call back made.
We make every effort to prioritize emergency calls; this includes rescheduling non-emergent services to accommodate emergencies. If a call is received outside of business hours we will follow up and aim to address your emergency the following business day.
If at any time you have safety concerns regarding the operation of any mechanical system in your home (furnace, heat pump, hot water heater, HRV/ERV, exhaust or ventilation system), cut power to the system by the emergency switch (if applicable) or turning off the breaker to the unit at your electrical panel. Call for service and leave the unit OFF until a technician arrives.
No, all service calls are charged as time taken and materials used. The hourly rate charged for labour is consistent across all services, regardless of being emergent or not.
We offer residential/small scale installation and servicing from Annapolis Royal to Avonport, including surrounding areas between these communities.
Warm air furnaces, that use ductwork to move warm air through a home. Hot water boilers, that use piping to move radiant heat throughout the home. Oil-fired hot water heaters, oil-fired portable furnaces/construction furnaces. We do not service gravity fed/oil drip stoves.
- 1hr labour for cleaning the unit, smoke pipe and burner.
- Replacement nozzle, and replacement oil filter cartridge.
- Efficiency test is run with a combustion analyzer and visual inspection of the oil tank.
- 2hr labour to disassemble indoor and outdoor units for access. Clean cabinets, coil, filters and fan blades, flush condensate drain and reassemble unit.
- Enviro-safe coil cleaner
Steel (12G Double Bottom) and Single Wall or Double Wall Fibreglass.
No – we do not currently have a gas technician on staff.
Standard Electric, High-efficiency electric (stone lined), Hybrid (heat pump w/ electric), and oil-fired.
We are an Authorized Mitsubishi Electric Canada dealer; we have previously operated as a Daikin Atlantic dealer. Installing both ducted and ductless systems in various applications, retrofit and new build.
Please note for heat pump repairs, we only service units that we have installed.
- Workmanship warranty policy of 1-year on new system installations. After 1-year warranty coverage remaining is manufacturers warranty. Warranty documentation is provided with all quotes.
- Warranty for service/repair parts are covered by the terms of the manufacturer’s warranty on each piece of equipment, or part.
